The CAL Fire Amador-El Dorado Unit (AEU) provides fire protection and emergency medical services to the unincorporated areas of the counties of Amador, El Dorado, Alpine, as well as portions of Sacramento and San Joaquin counties, all located southeast of the City of Sacramento on the west slope of the Central Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, in the northeastern poirtion of California. AEU encompasses 2,667,841 acres, while AEU's Direct Protection Area (DPA) serves approximately 910,589 acres. The United States Forest Service (USFS), Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) manage lands that are protected by AEU. Conversely, in addition to national forest lands, the USFS provides direct wildland fire protection to privide lands within the El Dorado and Toiyabe National Forest. The approximate resident population in AEU's DPA is 320,053 inhabitants.
